Pastor's Pen

Updated: Jun 13

And suddenly, the dog days of summer have arrived! We have been blessed with enough rain to raise Lake Buchanan 11 feet (the last report I heard). My grass is green and filling in around the weeds. And the church is thriving! New people are visiting and coming back. Not only are they coming back, they are asking “How can I help?” Last Sunday, June 2, we had 40 people in worship. The potluck luncheon was a joy to this pastor’s heart. Lively conversation could be heard all around the room. No one was eating alone. New people were engaged in relationship building.

The first Sunday in June marks my 2 year anniversary with this amazing group of Jesus followers. I have been blessed by the way Y’all have come together to move this church into a healthy future. I see cooperation, compassion, and communication as we work together to serve our community and build Jesus’ Kingdom.

I enjoy the sounds of small children in worship. They come forward for Children’s Time with enthusiasm. When we are distracted by their very normal, short attention spans, we would do well to remember Jesus’ words in Matthew 18: 1 - 6 (NIV):

1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3 And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. 6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

I don’t know about you, but I take Jesus’ words very seriously in regards to these children. My prayer has become: Lord, let us learn from these children how to trust you, love you, and serve you. And may we live in a way that shows them Your love and leads them to follow You.

I will be taking a few days at the beach. My plan is to leave after church Sunday June 9 and be back in time for church next week. Most of this time, I will be “off the grid”, meaning I will be unable to receive calls and text messages. In order to keep my voicemail from becoming full, I invite you to send me a short text regarding hospitalizations and deaths. I will respond to these messages when I am “on the grid”. However, you should contact your Elder.
